Its not as good as a proper GPS but who can argue about the cost of it.

Aus saftey cameras

http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/au/lang/en/poi

change that arrow to something else

http://www8.garmin.com/vehicles/bund...lvehicles.html
you need to be running the upgrade i posted 5.00.5 to use them instead of the arrow

couple of custom voices to use

http://rapidshare.com/files/212678837/Cartman_VPM.rar

http://rapidshare.com/files/21395103...and_Stewie.rar (I included Stewie's fixed voice too)

http://rapidshare.com/files/213912212/Stewie_VPM.rar

These are modified pigtone's .vup files, turned into .vpm files, which you can upload to your device or mobile phone with Mobile XT, without using Pigtone's uploader.

New aditions: SEDARA, PIERRE PISSANT

http://rapidshare.com/files/210554477/Sedara.rar
HOT HOT HOT Sedara, this is one dirty chick! RATED: R (don't use this .vpm if you have children in the vehicle). This is a .vpm file, just upload it to your device (1st keep a backup copy of your original English_American_.vpm

http://rapidshare.com/files/21055668...re_Pissant.rar

You need to rename the files eg cartman.vpm to English_American_.vpm

then just back up the English_American_.vpm file from your phone to your pc, and replace it with the renamed file

Bump... just want to say thanks Tripper for the links to the latest version and maps, finally got around to installing it all on the N82 and it's working well. New UI and colours seem more user friendly and easier to read too.

LOL at some of the voice packs! I copied the old "voice" folder from the previous Garmin version and renamed a few of the new voice packs to the French, German, Italian, etc file names instead of only having one at a time on there as English. Seemed to work, and can now flick through different voice packs in the car by choosing different languages.

Jill and Sedara seem to be exactly the same voice set, but Sedara is missing a couple words so deleted that one.

Thanks again mate

Btw, did you manage to get the vehicles to work? i put it in a sub folder called "vehicle" but they all just come up as blanks when you scroll through them in the app

Cheers

Ah I think that's what it was, looks like it takes too long to draw them all when you load the lot because they are huge files. Just loaded a couple and it works. Thanks again. Got the little white car with blue cobra stripes and that sexy bitch voice, I'm all set. Now if only I could see where I was going in this dust storm.

BUMP

Want to get a GPS for my old man, I know absolutely nothing about them. I understand some of the new ones have live traffic updates - needs to have this.

What is the go for <$500?

Garmin or tomtom, the live traffic updates require a subscription and a fm transmitter

Was just reading some reviews, there are models that come with live traffic subscription free, and built in transmitters.

Any particular models the go, or just anything TomTom/Garmin? What about NavMan?

The traffic updates come via the suna traffic channel. Coincidentally, this information is also available on the iphone using google maps (click 'show traffic' in maps).

All tomtom's have this functionality. Some use a mobile phone paired to the unit (obviously not ideal), you can buy the fm receiver for an existing unit, whilst others have the receiver included in the unit (but the unit costs more because you're essentially paying for a lifetime subscription to the information).

Tomtom have the 720 traffic (has all the voice calling, mp3, fm transmitter, photos, text to speech, etc) and the XL traffic (doesnt have all the extra crap). The 720 will run ~$600 from an online shop, the XL traffic ~$400.

Tomtom IMHO is still the best choice (seems to be popular on PF too). I've used garmin's and navman's, and the tomtom is the easiest and fastest to use.

im supposed to sell nav mans at work.

i refuse to.

tomtom, garmin, OR cheap unknown shit > navman and their ass service

tomtom is slightly simpler to use than the garmin, but if i were looking at a new one myself, id go garmin. main reason is that it has a mode where u can make it leave a line where you have travelled. so if you go off road, it leaves a line you can use to retrace to find your way back.

you can also get what they call SHONKYMAPS which are off road and topographical maps, and they are free from somewhere in the internets.

Garmin Mobile XT 5.00.60

ive only ran it as a update to the previous 5.00.5 version i posted. havent tested it out fully yet, but its fixed a zooming issue i had the previous version when browsing maps on my N95. Will test it out on the road tommorow

http://rs753.rapidshare.com/files/27...060_INT_pl.rar
Password: tom1807

to run as a update connect the phone in pcsuite mode and run the sis file, follow on screen prompts to replace current version

new install
copy all files and folders, except the "Unlock" folder to the root folder of your SD Card (E:\)
Run GarminMobileXT.sis

the unlock folder contains keygens etc, and you will need to install the maps for Australia posted earlier in the thread

I ve asked a few retailers what the best seller is, and most say navman, tomtom and garmin are up there,

my experience with navman has been absolutely dreadful,

crappy product, crappy service, and crappy support,

ive been GPS less for a few months now because its been in and out of repairs

although I haven';t tried other brands, its not very user friendly...

I would recommend against anything navman

Good stuff Tripper, cheers.

Do you know if you can use these maps on the ~$200 Garmin units? Might get the old man one for xmas would be good to be able to keep maps up to date. Some dude at JB Hifi reckons the mobile XT maps won't work on them?

I've been using my Nokia N97 with the free license for navigation using Maps 3.0 and I gotta say, it's actually pretty good now. When I first got the phone with maps 1.0 then maps 2, it was pretty shit. GPS took ages to lock, software was slow as shit, had to pay for license to use voice navigation, search for street names and locations sucked ass and interface was very clunky. They have fixed it all up now, and its even got free traffic update info. Running firmware 21 has also helped a lot.

It also comes with lonely planet and an events guide linked to the maps.

it works on the symbian software, i think the N900 is a linux based OS you would need to find out what the OS of the phone is before you tried
